Milagro Detects TeV Emission from Sources in the Fermi Bright Source List

The 14 Fermi sources observed at 3σ or more in the Milagro data. Shown is the Milagro
significance map with the location of the Fermi source indicated with white dots.

The Fermi collaboration has recently announced a list of the 205 most significant sources. The figure shows the 14 Fermi sources which are observed at more than 3σ in the Milagro data. A preprint for the paper is available on the arXiv. This is encouraging for HAWC because all of these detections are visible in HAWC with only a few months of data. This suggests that there is a lot of interesting sources just waiting at the edge of Milagro's sensitivity for HAWC to explore.

The First HAWC Event

The first HAWC event. Shown
is the digitized waveform in
time recorded from the 3
prototype tanks.

With three test tanks deployed at the HAWC site, Andres Sandoval has led a team to deploy a small DAQ and acquire cosmic-ray data with the small array. Data was taken with a commercial FADC with 0.5 ns time binning. The figure is the first event taken with the system. We certainly have a long way to go, but it is refreshing to have the first data.
